Sacral Nerve Stimulation (SNS)

Sacral Nerve Stimulation (SNS), also known as sacral neuromodulation, is a treatment that can help improve bladder and bowel control in some people. It is used to treat overactive bladder, including urinary urge/incontinence. [1]

It’s important to understand that SNS helps manage symptoms, it does not cure underlying conditions such as ARM. It is best understood as a management tool that may improve quality of life rather than a complete solution.

How the Sacral Nerves Work

The bladder, bowel, and pelvic floor muscles are controlled by sacral nerves located in the lower spine. These nerves carry messages between the brain and pelvic organs, allowing you to recognise when your bladder or bowel is full, control when you pass urine or open your bowels, and coordinate muscle movement and relaxation.

Sacral Nerve Stimulation

This communication is essential for normal continence and proper emptying. Sacral Nerve Stimulation is a treatment that involves implanting a small device that uses low intensity electrical currents to stimulate sacral nerves. The device works in a similar way to a pacemaker, but it is designed to regulate bladder and bowel function.

How Sacral Nerve Stimulation Can Help

SNM may help to:

  • Reduce urinary leakage and urgency

  • Improve bladder emptying

  • Improve bowel control (in some people)

  • Improve sensation of bladder or bowel fullness

How Effective is Sacral Nerve Stimulation?

SNM can improve symptoms, particularly for bladder problems.

It tends to work best when:

  • The nerves are present but not functioning properly

It may be less effective when:

  • Nerves or muscles are absent or underdeveloped

Limitations - Sacral Nerve Stimulation can not:

  • Cure Anorectal Malformation

  • Replace missing nerves or muscles

  • Work for everyone

It is best understood as a management tool that may improve quality of life rather than a complete solution.
